Bag Behavior

Janelle Harris - Creative Writer

What does your bag say about your fight? 1 Samuel 17:39-41 NIV “Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.”

Stepping out on your front door is like stepping onto the battlefield. Whether we take the time to realize it or not we are in a spiritual war and ladies have the most outward appearance of artillery.

Without assuming that all bag carriers are created equal. An assumption can be made that the contents consists of instruments for hygiene, identification and some form of paper or plastic representing legal currency…modern day “smooth stones!”

If the handles are frayed and it has holes…it’s been through enough combat. So no matter how you choose to accessorize…face your Philistine (daily issues) with a bag that is ready for battle instead of looking like it’s been through a battle!

when i think about it, the big bag phase was/is rather stressful. the bigger the bag the more "useful" junk we carry. we complicate our image with the things i believe make me think more and add on to my human experiance. e.g: do i really need 5 different shades of the same lip-gloss just incase i loose one i know i have a back-up? where as if i just had one, and took care of it like a good steward, then my load will be lighter. the stones in this passage were counted, specific and with purpose (now that i look at it) and personally, i have way tooo many things in my bag ,and life, that really don't and can't add to who i am so why do i carry them??

i love big bags! that's the thing but now im challenged to fill it with stuff that really matters... love, joy peace patience, goodness, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness and self-control...and if i need anything (leaving stuff at home of feeling shy) i know im covered by the Spirit in me, the God who supplies all my needs.

haha, love this article!

lefaith, you bring up some great points in your post!! I've been on a charge to not only empty my bags but my closet. I find that giving people your pre-owned bags (not the one's with the frayed handles :), that fit their personality can be such a blessing! Some of the bags I give people are more vintage or flowery, sometimes the bags are more sophisticated and sleek. I've found that it brings a smile to people's faces when they see you've thought about them, shown them love through a small gift, and you've emptied out your closet at the same time! Its a win-win!

Guilty as charged! My bags say I have been attempting to fight this battle on my own. Therefore, I surrender yet again. I put down the torn and tattered bags that weigh me down. I now "accessorize" myself with a renewed faith and face the Philistines as I whisper boldly "not by power, nor by might but by my spirit says the Lord of Hosts" Its a new season and it time to replace the worn and tired with a fresh look.
