There was a time in
history were a Messenger bag was just that—a bag that a messenger
carried. It had a shoulder strap and was usually large and
rectangle in shape. It was used to carry the items he was hired to
deliver. Simple and efficient.
Times have changed! Now there are numerous choices of bags
specifically for men. Bags created from durable canvas with colored
piping. Bags made of the finest leathers with sturdy straps and
shiny latches. Bags produced by some of the most well known
designers of our time. Manhattan Portage in its vintage style and
steps ahead of others recreated the Messenger Bag in 1983. Big name
designers such as Prada, Fendi and Burberry also produce sharp,
practical messenger bags for men.
A Messenger bag is a larger bag and
suited to the needs of what men carry. It is not a man purse or a
“murse” as they have become known.
In Scripture men carried a bag with them to meet numerous needs as
they “journeyed” from place to place. Remember there were no cars,
and public transportation was a camel or donkey! The “purses” they
carried were actually money bags. They may have been made of a
sow’s ear and a length of rope for hanging around their neck when
they traveled. A far cry from Kenneth Cole or Ricardo of Beverly
Hills luggage huh?
No matter what you choose to carry ‘stuff” in, always carry with
you an abundance of kindness, gentleness of spirit and plenty of
grace and compassion. Then others will see the family resemblance
to your Father, God and your brother, Jesus!
